Florida foreclosures in Miami-Dade County surged 94% in September compared to a year ago, with 5,721 homeowners receiving word their lenders had started foreclosure proceedings. The rate rose 2% in Broward with 3,493 homes entering foreclosure.
RealtyTrac, which tallies new filings, scheduled auction sales and homes that were returned to lenders, suggest rising unemployment will possibly increase the region's foreclosure problem.
In September, some 1,312 homes were slated for auction in Miami-Dade and 687 were reclaimed by banks. 1,769 were scheduled for public sale in Broward and 1,280 were repossesed by banks. Among the worst performing counties in Florida, ranking sixth and seventh was Broward and Miami-Dade while St. Lucie County ranked first.
Florida foreclosures rose 15% statewide compared to a year ago, with a total of 55,036 homes in some stage of foreclosure. Florida ranked third nationally, in September.
For the third quarter, the rate in Miami-Dade was up 52%, compared with the same three months a year ago. In Broward, foreclosures rose 27% in the period ending August 31.
